Prayer Does What You Can't Do

Prayer puts a sword in our hand when we face temptation; it gives us strength to bear our daily burdens. Prayer brings man's storm-driven back into the haven of saftey and peace. It turns back the shadow of death on the face of life's dial. It giveth songs in night and lifts the load of guilt from the conscience-smitten heart. Prayer can fortify the soul when it kneels before the cup in some Gethsemane of sore agony. It can lift us up when we have fallen. Prayer brings angels down from heaven to minister to us when we have overcome the devil. It recalls the wanderer from the far country. It is the best physician for both body and soul. It companions the soul in its hours of lonliness and comforts it in the day of sorrow. Prayer sets a lamp of forgiveness and reconciliation in the window for the prodigal and the wanderer. It brings the eternal world to view. It makes the angels rejoice when they hear it on the lips of a contrite sinner. Prayer, that mighty, all prevailing, God-conquering word can open the door to heaven, for Jesus Himself said, "Knock, and it shall be open unto you," (Luke 11:9). "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much," (James 5:16).
